Looks like some people in my couunty were doing their part.

"Drunken driving arrests over the New Year's Day holiday weekend more than doubled this year across the county as residents pulled out their cell phones to report tipsy drivers weaving across the freeways.

The California Highway Patrol arrested 83 drivers suspected of drunken driving over the long weekend, compared with the 33 DUI arrests last year. One person died this year in an alcohol-related accident, compared with no deaths last year.

Locally, CHP officers said the upswing of arrests are a combination of increasingly relaxed attitudes about drunken driving and electronic freeway signs urging people to call 911 when they see drunken drivers on the road.

"More and more, people are calling to report the bad driving habits of other people after seeing those signs," CHP officer Jim Bettencourt said.

CHP officers are out in force during holiday weekends, but it can be tough for officers to spot every driver who may have had too much to drink, CHP officer Katrina Lundgren said.

"You have to be in the right place at the right time to catch a drunk driver – and that just hardly ever happens," Lundgren said. "This helps us to be in the right place at the right time."

Calls reporting drunken drivers to the CHP dispatch center in Irvine doubled over the holiday weekend, with many callers telling dispatchers they called after seeing the signs on the freeway, said Tom O'Donnell, a CHP dispatch supervisor."
