I've heard of parents charging rent, which forces the child to be responsible with his money. When he is ready to move out, you can give him a part of the rent he paid or all of it as a down payment on a home of his own.

Forcing him to take responsibility in this way is good for him. He'll learn a lot about money management and delayed gratification that will help him in the long run.
