Not so much petty as sort of distressing. I suppose I just figure that being a teenager wasn't easy (I'm 25 now), and I don't want kids to suffer for things they could be warned against. I have managed to spot the start of a couple of problems with a coworker's daughter that he hadn't noticed, and was able to take care of. People a couple of years younger than me seem really petty, though. I was aware of things that happened well before I was born, and was expected to be able to handle technologies that were fading as I was growing up. If my grandparents wanted to talk about something that had been popular in the 50's, I had some idea what they were talking about, because I knew a lot had come before me. I know people now who don't seem to realise that life existed before 1998!
