I would of put it up and then waited to see how long it took him to say anything, then maybe let him sweat it for a day or two longer. $5 is one thing but $100?
I have 2 jars on the dryer, one for pennies and one for other change and bills. If I know it belongs to one of the kids or they ask about it, I'll give it to them. DH uses it for treats at work, refills of pop when he's going out, newspaper. I also dump all my change in there (mostly use debit card so I don't have a lot), and any I find laying around the house, if it's getting low I'll throw in a few dollar bills. He takes his lunch most of the time, as long as I have enough stuff for him to take he doesn't really use it to much.
I found another really good use for it. If the house is a mess and the kids are not in the mood to help, I've taken some change out and tossed it around in the rooms that need cleaned with out the kids knowing, then point out a couple coins and tell them if they help me clean they can keep any change they find as long as they finish helping me clean. All other times found change must be put in the jars. They will even pull the sofas out and clean under them when I do this (I always toss a couple quartes under them so they'll clean under them next time). For a couple bucks in change I get a clean house with no fighting or whinning.
