My 10 YO DD is in competitive dance 2 nights a week, fall & spring outdoor soccer, winter indoor soccer, summer softball, Junior Girl Scouts & piano lessons.
The rules in our house are they do what activities they want and we support them. But, grades must stay up, homework must be done and once they sign up for an activity, they must complete that season. They cannot quit because they don't want to practice or whatever..but they absolutely do not have to sign up again if they don't want to. It's their choice what they do. They may miss a practice here and there if they are heavy on homework that night - school comes first. They have developed excellent time management skills.

Sounds almost identical in my house:
DD (11) is in competitive dance 4x a week & piano 1x week
DD (9 1/2) is in competitive dance 3x a week, competitive gymnastics 4x week and piano 1x week.
They must, must, must keep up with their school work and they do. They wanted all these activities and love doing them so we support them all the way but they do understand that school always comes first and they're both doing a fantastic job!
