I thought you always needed a social security number to buy a bond. I would prefer my nephews if this is the case so that there isn't any problems down the line. If the gift is being given to him and a social security number is needed which always has been then I don't see why they won't supply this. I don't think they have to worry about identity theft with his aunt/Godmother. I have always given my kids # when relatives asked.
