Oh dear, I've gotta eat crow on this one....17YO DS had an unexpected meeting with a curb last night (first snowstorm of the year) and it's not driveable. BUT, I do think that these kind of things will happen ... and the same thing might have happened at 18 or 19...

Ugh....but looks like hubby can fix it himself and be able to save about $500 that way.
