I lost a parent to a lung disease, and that was definitely a symptom we watched progress as the disease progressed. If I recall correctly, it's due to poor oxygenation in the furthest places blood has to travel away from the heart and lungs.

OP, I'm so sorry you've had this ordeal, and hope that in fact there is more hope than they initially gave you!
