When you sign up for AE Rewards card, every quarter (4 times a year) you are sent a coupon based on your spending. as the poster before said, the reward percentage is based on your spending at the store.
you earn reward points for every purchase based on what items you buy.

the little card I got I haven't checked it out yet, but I hope I won something. I should own stock in that store with two teens who all they wear is AE. When I do the laundry I feel like I work there.
