We do the same thing. I figure if it is a number we don't know and someone is trying to reach us, then they will leave a message and we will pick up. The only times I feel I have been rude to them is when they are rude to me first.
I've had a Discover credit card telemarketer call and berate me b/c I hadn't used my credit card. I keep it for emergencies and that is it. He was quite rude about it and then I basically told him what I thought.
