My son is grown and out of the house. When he was growing up he walked or rode his bike to elementary and walked to middle school.
When he was in high school we had moved so he walked a good half a mile or so to the city bus stop and took the bus. When my work schedule allowed it I would either give a ride or pick him up but I felt it was important for both his physical health as well as his social development to walk at least one way with his friends and the other kids.

I must add that there were no dangerous roads or neighborhoods for him to cross or walk through that would have made a huge difference.
