Yes, if you are over 40. With a family history of breast cancer, I wasted no time scheduling the first mammogram. It doesn't take long and while there is pressure, there should not be any pain. The paperwork takes longer than the exam and every tech I've had has been extremely professional and courteous. Do not be surprised if they ask for a second screening. Calcium deposits frequently show and it's best to have things double checked. That happened to me on my first two mammograms and it was scary to be told they wanted additional images. Everything is fine, though.
Please do not delay. I can still vividly recall the terrible days of my aunt before she passed away. This was a woman who was always dressed to the nines with full makeup every single day. To see her in hospice with no hair and unable to feed herself was more than I could handle.
