Marilyn, I deliberately put the LOL there to indicate the same thought-that words are obviously open to interperatation depending on one's upbringing. I do, however, agree with the OP that this time, the word uppity was used in a negative conotation. Although I was raised in the North, where we called a spade a spade, I live in the South, and uppity has both meanings here, too.
