They more than likely were with him and were able to say good bye as he left for deployment but from first hand experience, no one had their weapon strapped to them unless it was one that he had illegally.

I am not denigrating their son's service or anything like that as my son is a marine as well, I am just questioning why she would say such a thing if it weren't true.
Some Marines do, indeed "strap on their weapon" when deploying.
