Which leads me to ask---Why did he go by "Barry" for so long?
Now, this is just my personal observation, but when people "anglocize" their name to fit in, and then revert back to their given name that indicates a possible difference in their heritage--I find that very telling of their character.
Nicknames are a pet peeve of mine anyway--If I wanted my kid called "Mike" I would have named him Mike and not Michael. So it may just be my predisposition to not liking nicknames that makes me question this.
