see, I have no problem w/ using a persons last name, and have never heard that it was rude--of course, I have been around a lot of law enforcement and US Military. It's common practice to refer to address someone w/ their last name. I rarely referred to the Sgt. and Lts. that supervised the dispatcher center as "Sgt. Smith" or "Lt. Brown". It was always "Smith, I got a call for you", "Brown, you want to take the missing vehicle call?" So, I think it really depends on your frame of reference as to whether calling someone by their last name is rude....
