Let me start by saying you HAVE to have a true desire to stop smoking or NO smoking aid will help you stop.
That being said I consider Chantix as my saving grace. I was a VERY heavy chain smoker and had been for many years. I really enjoyed my cigarettes but they were slowly killing me (literally). I coughed horribly day and night. The dr. said she could barely hear air going into my lungs when I took a deep breath as she had the stethascope (sp) to my chest. I had tried every other smoking aid I ever heard of including hypnosis but none came close to helping.
It took the Chantix much longer to work for me than it was supposed to but I kept taking it and slowly decreasing the number of cigarettes per day. I was finally down to one per day, usually in the evening. One evening I got busy and accidently forgot my cigarette. I didn't think about it till the next day but that was the end of my smoking. But I continued on the Chantix for a couple more months just for safety. I can honestly say I have not lite a cigarette since the one before the forgotten one. But I can also honestly say the desire creeps back frequently. Chantix or not you DO still have to exercise some self control. I've been told by former smokers that the desire NEVER completely leaves you.
So, yes, I truely believe in Chantix. But if a person doesn't have a true desire to quit NOTHING can help. And you do have to resist the desires, but Chantix makes it MUCH easier to resist.
Oh, and yes, the stupid dreams are aside affect of it. Not scary dreams, just stupid ones.

And by the way my last cigarette was May 24, 2007 If I can quit anyone can.

ETA: Yes, Chantix isn't cheap but it doesn't cost any more per month than a carton of cigarettes per week, probably less.
