It concerns me that kids have no idea (other than what they learn in school) what transpired in the 60's, no real concept of who Rosa Parks is and the courage she showed, no clue about the Little Rock 9, no idea who Freedom Riders or Medgar Evars are, no idea how much was sacrificed to get to this point. I don't want my grandkids to think this is no big deal. I want them to know exactly what a big deal it is.
DD took her 10 yr old to vote with her this morning. She tried to explain the significance.
Ya know what though? Maybe it's good that each new generation might not get it. Maybe that means that the ugliness of past decades is diminishing. |
nancy, that is what I think, as well. DD has never said anything or inferred anything about the Obamas being a different skin color than she is. She wanted Hillary Clinton, but, then wanted Obama "he's for education, Mom", she would say. I do think that the newer generations are not as "in touch" with the issues of the 60's since they are several years removed from it. I think it's a good thing.
