I don't understand saying one's ds and dh eat meat and that's okay... but that it's not okay for animals to die at the hand of humans and have the humans present remain composed.

It is what it is. The turkey has to die somehow. It may not be for the squeamish, but the fact that she wasn't reduced to a wailing lump of blubber over fowl doesn't speak ill of her, IMHO.
