I think the older generation probably sees the younger generation as less active (be it less physical activity because of modern conveniences or more time spent in front of TV or video games or whatever) and less concerned overall with their appearance and it saddens them. The older generation is used to June Cleaver type moms - fit/thin, attractive, and "properly" dressed - and Ward Cleaver type dads - ditto....or the Gunsmoke man.

I think one reason may be they think people are spoiled and overindulged without doing enough physical work. These people come from a time when you walked, plowed, carried things, chopped wood, etc.
