I think the grandmother having the kids for now is the best solution, someone had to be chosen at least temporarily. Sure she is elderly, but certainly there are relatives and nannies to help.
I believe MJ also owned the Elvis music catalog in addition to the Beatles so even if he spent money like water I don't see his estate as being 'in debt' overall. If things are properly handled his children are likely to inherit many millions.
