My feeders are on the east side of the house, so they do get the morning sun but not the hot afternoon sun. The birds don't seem to mind the sun.
What does matter is what you feed them. They will drink the pre-made solution you buy in the store, but if you look up info online it says that red colored pre-made stuff is not good for them. (has red food color in it.) The best is to make it yourself. (and cheaper too) Just make up a solution of 1/2 cup of sugar to 2 cups water. Bring it just barely to a boil then bring it to room temp. before filling feeders.
