It's a regular toaster but there's a little side "cup" that you put the egg in to cook it. A little bit of water goes in the bottom, an egg goes in a little metal cup over the water and a lid goes over the whole thing to hold in the steam. There's a button you hit for "Egg and Toast" and it times the cooking so both are done at the same time. FANTASTIC for making breakfast sandwiches. And you can make just toast or just eggs if you want to, no problem.

I had this toaster, but it died after about a year....and 2 moves....so, I guess I got my money out of it. But, I would buy it again. We used the egg thing quite a bit, but the downside is that you can only make one at a time.
I would suggest the tin can idea.....a tuna fish can is the perfect size and height actually, but make sure you spray it with a little Pam before you use it. My standard size skillet holds 3 cans. The other thing that I found is if you are an egg white only person, you can use a silver dollar pancake pan (got mine and crate and barrel) and that works if you want to make smaller, thinner egg portions.
