I know that when our dog was battling salmon poisoning, a community member had given money to the vet to take care of animals that were in need of costly diagnosis or care. I don't know if you will have this in your area, but I would imagine a lot of vets do have money like this. It was not expected that you pay it back...but we have. We have paid it back and done a little extra as we have had extra (like $10.00 here and there).
