I didn't follow it to know what conviction he has, however.....many true professions ( I don't consider playing sports a profession) can and will bar a person with a specific conviction history whether related or not to their work. Many states specifically have statutes addressing this for professional licensure.
Your number 2 is great except there is money in the equation and that is why he's back in the game.
