I wouldn't say it's the norm but yes, people DO paint odd and unappealing colors. Some do it just to tick off the neighbors. I have lived in such a neighorhood before. It may not be orange but it could be yellow...which can be a nice color on a house, unless it's BRIGHT yellow...like glow in the dark (and yes, I've seen that too). Or how about blue that's almost black. Not attractive on a house (that one is a couple miles from us currently). We have a friend who painted the top triangle part of his house in a rainbow and painted the fence to match. We adore him but are glad we aren't his neighbors
