I think a lot depends on the popularity of the item and how many people pre-ordered it.

We always try to pre-order months in advance, to ensure we will get the item out of the first batch received.

If you pre-order a week or day or so before the item is released, if it is a very popular item, chances are you will need to wait for another batch of the item to be received before it is shipped to you.
