What version of Word is the person sending you the document using? Sounds like maybe they have a newer version. They'll probably need to select "Save As" and then look for Microsoft Word 2003 under the "Save as Type" option.

I think there might be a free conversion program available to download, but I don't know much about it. I'll ask at work. I think one or two people needed it to be able to read Word for Vista documents.
