We used to have one at work so we didn't really have time for much else besides picking up our cookies. I think usually (for parties held at home), everyone brings some extra cookies (6 or 12 or whatever, depending on how many people are attending) so everyone can sample them (along with coffee, tea, etc. provided by the hostess).

I think they're great especially for people who don't have a lot of time to bake. You can bake a large batch of one type of cookie and end up with an assortment without needing to buy a lot of different ingredients.
