I would definitely NOT intervene in a fight.

Maybe management could have intervened and broken it up.
Maybe management could have called the cops.

Management should have definitely thrown them out of the store. That is ridiculous. People fighting not only poses a threat to themselves, they also endanger thier fellow shoppers and it looks tacky for the store to allow it.
