We have a metal step-can for our downstairs bathroom- the dog sniffs and goes away.

We keep our trash can in the pantry which the dog doesn't even bother with. Plus it is out of sight. We used to keep it under the sink but then we got a larger trash can b/c i was tired of taking it out every 2 seconds!
