What is the best way to clean carpets?

We have done away with most of the carpet in our house, but in the past I have rented one of those Rug Doctors. I thoroughly clean the machine before use and a little tip I do is add vinegar to the shampoo solution. It's cleans and gets rid of odor, and also it cleans the machine.

Thanks for the tips. We rent so i have to deal with the carpets!
