I am not sure it makes a difference. Ours is in the shade in the morning, but by evening in the sun and does not seem to bother them. I saw the first one of the season at our feeder yesterday.

Since ours hangs pretty high on the window we have not really had a problem with ants. The bees do come around every once in awhile, but not enough to bother the birds.

It doesn't matter to the hummingbirds if it is in the shade or the sun but it does matter to the sugar water. When it is in the sun, it does need to be changed more often. If you have a hanging feeder, you can purchase an ant guard which is basically a cup to hang above it. Once filled with water, ants can't go past it. If it is a suction cup window feeder, there is not much you can do. I have one that I love so I spray the window sills with ant spray and change the liquid frequently. They also sell bee guards with are plastic yellow pieces that fit in the ports. The hummingbirds can get the liquid but the bees cannot.

My feeders are on the east side of the house, so they do get the morning sun but not the hot afternoon sun. The birds don't seem to mind the sun. What does matter is what you feed them. They will drink the pre-made solution you buy in the store, but if you look up info online it says that red colored pre-made stuff is not good for them. (has red food color in it.) The best is to make it yourself. (and cheaper too) Just make up a solution of 1/2 cup of sugar to 2 cups water. Bring it just barely to a boil then bring it to room temp. before filling feeders.

I thought the recipe was 4:1. Here is a recipe I looked up online. I have to admit. I do add a small amount of red color in sometimes. I have made it without and the birds like it either way. Ingredients 1/2 cup sugar 2 cups water Directions 1 Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. 2 Boil for 2 minutes. 3 Cool completely. 4 DO NOT add food coloring to water! 5 Fill your hummingbird feeder and keep remaining feeding solution in the refrigerator up to one week. |
