Does anyone know

if the FoodSaver vacuum sealer bags can be used for long term storage of dry foods, such as beans, seeds, etc? Dh and I are putting together some seed storage units and wondered if I could just use the bags instead of glass jars or something like that. It'd make things a lot easier if I can use them, I'm just worried about long term storage. Don't want any chemicals or anything like that leaching into the seeds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, they can be used for long-term storage. What kind of storage units are you putting together and for what/how much? I'm just asking because you can seal your beans, etc. in mason jars (I know you can pickles, so I'm guessing you have quart jars around). That would be a lot cheaper than using the bags. Plus when you use some of the beans, you can just reseal the rest of them back in the same jar. No waste of the expensive bags. And they look SO MUCH prettier than the bags!

Thanks lfaivre. This is what we want to do:

http://survivalseedbank.com/

We want to just put a few seeds (total about 20 or so different veggies and such)in each bag and then seal in a large container and give as Christmas gifts. Dh thought he could get small glass jars but not sure if he can get the quantity we would need. That's why we thought of maybe using the vacuum sealer, trying to cut the cost a bit but still make a nice gift.
