I am in the process of bidding on an item on ebay but sometimes after I've been outbid

I'll try again so I put in my new bid and right away I get a message that I've been outbid already

but when I go see the other bids it looks like I was bidding against myself!!!(please help)

could you please explaine what all this means

This is a common question. There is a person who bid before you that has entered a higher number so when you bid and your bid is less than his, his bid automatically increases.

For example Bidder #1 bid $50
You bid $20
His bid automatically goes to $22.50
You bid $25
His bid automatically goes to $30
You bid $35
His bid automatically goes to $40
You bid $50
He is still showing high bidder at $50 because he put his bid in first
You bid $55
You're the high bidder!

Once you exceed his high bid it will show you as high bidder, till then, it looks like you're bidding against yourself, but you're not.

Its called a Proxy bid.. when you first place a bid you can go higher then the required amount.
