I just don't have a good feeling about this, am I being weird? I bid on a book, I was the second bidder, then had several bids until I was the high bidder, then another bid by the original bidder, then I quit bidding. So the original bidder has the high bid, then one more bid after that by someone totally new. The auction ends, as SOON as the auction ended, the seller contacts me with a second chance offer. Even if the higher bidder backed out wouldn't she offer it to the next highest bidder first, which would not be me. And would the highest bidder be able to back out of the deal that quickly? Something does not seem right. Opinions???

I agree, the buyer probably has one or more duplicate items. As a seller, I do this all the time, but she should have put in the offer that she is contacting you because she has more of the same items. As a bidder, I like that - I bid what I think an item is worth to me and then, sometimes a seller will make a 2nd chance offer to me at my last bid price. So I get what I wanted at my price. Remember - a 2nd chance offer price cannot be more than your last bid. I know you are concerned about "shill bidding" and unfortunately with eBay's new changes, there is just no way to know.
