Need some advice on this nightmare auction

Help----I sold an item a few weeks ago that the seller paid for insurance on. She says it arrived dirty, smelly and broken which at least the first two were not correct. She took it to her post office and SAID they told her that I would have to deal with the insurance so she sent it back to me even though I told her that her post office could take care of it and I would fax her the insurance paper. She sent it back to me INSURED.... I do not want to pay her even for the return shipping much less the amount she paid for insurance on a broken item. There were some discrepencies in the pictures also so I am not convinced that a switch was not made. I have over 600 positive feedbacks at 100%, she has O feedback. Any advice???

If she used Paypal, she might get a refund of what she paid you, not the return postage.

USPS could have started the claim and taken the item from her.

I'd tell her that you are filing the claim and will reimburse her when USPS pays. Remind her that USPS could have taken the item from her, and shipping it back was unnecessary.

If they pay, you'll get the value and postage less insurance fee. Probably best to eat the fee and fully refund her original payment.

saturnfan is correct, as usual

I would not reimburse her right away (and only reimburse the the actual charges not the charge to send it back)

I'd just wait and see what the PO has to say. She jumped the gun on that and should have just had her PO handle it there. In fact, I thought they HAD to return it to their PO, including the box and all packing material. I wonder if you will have trouble with the claim because it was sent back.

If you think it may have been a switch - really study the pics you took against the item that is returned. It's hard to prove, but if there is any definitive proof from the pics, PP would deny the refund.
