I need some help from y'all. I wanted to buy my husband a Jeep for our 10 year anniversary. I have been looking and found one on Craigslist; 2007 Wrangler Unlimted X for $4500. These go for $20-23,000.00. I emailed the seller and she said she got it in a divorce and doesn't have a need for it.

She wants to complete the transaction through Ebay's Buyer Protection Program. I emailed her for more information regarding this. She states that the policy is I giver her my name and address, she sends that to Ebay which gives me an invoice, Ebay lets her know when to ship the car, she ships it to me, I get 5 days to decide if I want to keep it, they give her the money, if not I am refunded my money.

Is this a scam? Has anyone heard of this through Ebay? I know they have a vehicle protection program.

I didnt think it was ebay that had the buyer protection...I thought it was Paypal.

I would think that if she wanted to sell it on ebay she would already have it listed on ebay and get more money for it....not on craigslist where there is absoutely no protection.

everyone that i know of that has bought a car from ebay went and picked it up. gosh dont you want to test drive it or kick the tires at least?

also i would think that it would cost a whole lot of money these days to ship anything heavy especially a car.

That's what I thought as well...sounds fishy. I sold an Army jeep trailer on Ebay for dh and it was a pick up only, the guy who bought it came and looked at it, then paid us the balance of the money (I did require a deposit put on it) he owed. I can't imagine what the shipping cost would be for a Jeep!!

I've looked on Ebay and the shipping was about $150...this was for another Jeep on there that did offer shipping.

Has anyone heard of the 5 day change your mind, get your money back thing?

It doesn't sound right. I know there were some fake escrow programs making the rounds a few years ago. It reminds me of them.

I did a google search. DON'T BUY THIS JEEP! Seems as though this is definitely a scam and has been happening for a year or so.

Read this link: It's from people who are asking the exact question you are. But it's definitely a SCAM!

WOW, lucky you found out! We have purchased 2 motorcycles and a car off of Ebay and had pretty good experiences all 3 times. The $900 Saturn we bought was a great deal even though we had to drive 1 1/2 to pick it up and it was worth taking the risk for the deal we got without test driving. I would recommend buying there but after reading this, I am wondering.

Just buy through ebay and follow their rules.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use money transfer services like Western Union.

If the vehicle's valuable, get a mechanic to inspect it.
