How Does Your Garden Grow?
Posted 04-23-2007 at 07:00 AM by mycoupons
I love gardening and I love everything about gardening, the planting, the growing, the feel of the earth in my hands, even the worms but not bees. It's not that I don't love bees, they are one of the most needed things to have in any type of garden. They are the pollinators.
However, bees are the most fearful things to me. I'm allergic. It is not an uncommon scene for my neighbors during the gardening season to see me running around with arms flailing to get away from a bee. They chant "Oh It's Just Annie doing her Flight From The Bees Dance". That's ok, it makes them laugh and supplies me my dose of daily exercise. But nonetheless, I don't mind, the bees and I have worked out our mutual agreement and it won't deter me from my garden. I love gardening for so many reasons but the most important, my garden and an organic one, helps me save money with the family food budget.
With today's busy families there are certainly time constraints that limit what you can do. But, you don't need to dedicate a lot of time to it nor need a large space to grow easy things. Gardening is versatile. You can decide how small and how much. For instance, you can have just planters of herbs growing and you all know how much it costs to buy fresh herbs. Depending on the size of the container you can plant a few or several varieties in one pot. Herbs are great for adding flavor and zest to your meals, not to mention some contain antioxidant agents.
If you are able to and willing to go a step further, try more containers or a large one. Plant a tomato or pepper plant or two. You can plant just about anything in containers. You can plant more than one variety of vegetable in a container, this is called companion planting. It's based on the idea that certain plants can benefit others when planted in near proximity. With your tomato container, you can grow basil, parsley or some leaf lettuce. You choose. You can also pretty them up by planting certain beneficial flowers that deter pests naturally, such as marigolds, nasturtiums, chrysanthemums, dahlias. The choices are endless and so are the rewards.
Start small, start easy, and you'll start seeing how your garden grows!
