My Search for The Evening Primrose...

Posted 06-18-2007 at 07:00 AM by mycoupons
I can't believe it! After 2 seasons of searching for a perennial plant called Evening Primrose - Fireworks Evening .... I found it! Plus to find it in of all places ... a flea market!

This plant, I've admired for a long time. I drive by many houses nearby in my neighborhood, and see this dainty but yet striking vivid yellow flowering plant, planted outside in their front gardens . Each time saying, as I pass these homes, "Boy I wish I could find that plant".
I searched and searched and searched to no end. Checking every nursery within a 20 mile radius to no avail for not 1 season but 2!
Saturday morning, it was a bright, sunny and a breezy day when we arose. Thank goodness after almost a week-long stretch of inclement weather and below normal temps.... 60's, it was a sight to see. The sun. DH decided he wanted to get out and look for some blades for his new reciprocating saw, that I just purchased for him about 2 weeks back. In the stores, the blades go normally for $15 plus apiece. He said "Let's go to the flea market because I know I will find them cheaper there". We proceeded into our car, and off into the beautiful sunshine we made our merry way, 15 miles away to this flea market.
Once there, hubby proceeded to go browsing among all the vendors there, selling their tool wares. I made my way to look at a few people who had plant stands. You know me and plants. LOL! Some were selling veggie plants of all kinds and annuals.
All of a sudden, there it was! This vivid yellow flower that I had been searching for the longest of time. I rubbed my eyes and then re-opened them to make sure I was REALLY seeing what I thought I was seeing! Yep it was! Evening Primrose!
I squealed with delight and was so excited as though I was a child getting a special treat. The man had only 3 plants left, and I could see more people approaching his stand. I made my way faster than lighting striking a pole and grabbed 2 of the pots. I excitedly exclaimed out to the man, "I can't believe you have this plant, you don't know how long I've been searching for it"! I asked him what was his price for these plants were, they were in gallon pots. He replied "$6 each". Now, I wasn't going to dicker with that, because normally a perennial or biennial plant in a gallon pot would go for $8 or more, so I was happy with the price. However, I guess he was being kind seeing how excited I was over finding them, he said "I will sell you both for $10". Wow! Now I must be dreaming, not 1 but 2 evening primrose plants and plus he gave me $2 off! How better than a day can that get!
I pay the man and I pick up my 2 pots. I ran excitedly to my DH and proudly show him my buy. He thought maybe I was nuts when I told him I've been looking like forever for this plant. Well I'm not nuts, because as we were walking through the rest of the flea market, a vendor stopped me. She asked "Isn't that Evening Primrose"? I replied "Yes it is". She says "Oh my, where did you get that?" I said, "One of the vendors over there", pointing out to her what direction. She said "I've been looking for that plant for 2 years". I thought my hubby's jaw was going to drop. He said to her "That is so funny, that's what my wife just said to me, when she found the plant"! LOL!! She also went on to say, how she also searched many nurseries herself for it, and couldn't find it. For the life of us, we three could not figure out why this plant is so hard to find in the nurseries. But now I don't care, I have my Evening Primrose!
If you decide you would like to add this beautiful flower to your garden, here is some information on it.
They prefer full sun. They can be invasive, but as long as you remove the dead flowers before they seed, you can contain it. However, you do want to leave a few dead flowers so that they can seed for next year. They handle drought quite well. The variety Fireworks Evening that I purchased, can grow up to 18 inches tall and about 12 inches wide. They are hardy in zones 5 through 8. These can be planted from seed outside in early spring, but I wanted the actual plant already started.

Keep on gardening!
