1. Stop striving for the perfect holiday.
Don't set unrealistic expectations of the ultimate holidays. Enjoy the time with family don't set yourself up for disappointment by expecting everything to turn out perfectly.
2. Shop Early or Online.
Avoid the crowds at the local mall by either shopping early or online. MyCoupons has great coupon codes that make shopping online at many sites quite a bargain.
3. Don't over react to family members.
Family is wonderful but the stress of the holidays can push many relationships to the brink. Be prepared to let the off-hand comment go without bothering to defend yourself. Getting into heated arguments with annoying family members just makes things worse. Take a deep breath and just let it go.
4. You aren't Martha Stewart, so don't try to be the domestic diva and ultimate hostess.
Allow different members of the family to host different events during the holidays. Don't try to do it all yourself. If you had a house full of people for Thanksgiving, let somebody else host Christmas dinner. Splitting the effort between multiple family members can reduce the stress on everybody.
5. Be a smart shopper.
Buy people what you know they'll enjoy for the holidays. Don't waste money on gifts that won't really be appreciated. Plus don't kill yourself fighting to get the "hot" toy for your child.
6. Don't overspend. Give yourself a budget and stick to it. Need to compare prices? Use an online tool such as the MyCoupons COUParison engine to find the best prices. The important thing is to take the time to create your gift budget and then sticking to the budget. Don't max out the credit cards in an effort to create the perfect holiday experience.
7. Don't over indulge in alcohol. Alcohol and family gatherings can make a tense situation explode into a holiday nightmare. You can't control your crazy brother, your mother-in-law or your spouse but you can watch out for yourself. Limit yourself to a few drinks at the office holiday party too!
8. Set limits for yourself.
If you feel overwhelmed with shopping, cooking and visiting relatives don't hesitate to give yourself a stress break. Take a walk by yourself, spend a little quiet time, enjoy a leisurely bath.
9. Remember to take care of yourself.
Don't over do it at the parties you attend. Remember to get enough sleep and some exercise.
10. Enjoy the company of others.
The holidays can be lonely and intensely stressful. Plus the longer nights and much shorter daylight periods can have a very negative effect upon your mood. Enjoy the company of your friends and family.
