Shopping Boards Tech update
Posted 03-26-2007 at 12:40 PM by mycouponsgreg
During the week since the launch of our new site, we have made many changes to improve the performance of the new site and I have personally paid a lot of attention to the performance of the shopping boards in particular.
We made additional changes yesterday afternoon and a fairly signifigant change this morning. Although, these changes do appear to have helped with the speed of the site we are continuing to investigate other methods we can use to make the experience of using MyCoupons.com as speedy and pleasant as we possibly can make it.
For those of you interested in some of the detail of the changes we made, I am happy to share them with you.

- We implemented gzip compression. This means that the content that is sent from our web server to your browser has been compressed. This reduces the amount of data the server needs to send to you and speeds up the experience.
- We implemented a dedicated process for handling nothing but static content. This server process is much smaller than our standard process and again resulted in a slight increase in performance.
- We implemented a server side memory cache for speeding up the retrieval of the data required to display the boards (memcached).
- We implemented a template caching system so that the display of the boards would require less processing power and therefore be quicker.
