Summer in the South

Posted 06-15-2007 at 01:06 AM by tag1114
Though summer is not officially here, the temperatures and humidity have me convinced that it is summer. Is the weather like child birth to anyone else? You forget from one year to the next how brutal that season is. The weather starts to warm up and I get so excited. My kids start playing outside, 4 wheeling, playing in the water and just running around. Flowers begin to bloom, the grass greens up and I hear the buzzing of lawn mowers all around. And I tell myself that summer won't be that bad this year. And then out of nowhere, I walk out of my front door and find myself in a sauna. The air is thick and muggy, the heat almost knocks you down and suddenly that nice green grass is so dry you can hear it crunch as you step on it. Yes, friends summer has arrived in the south. My kids try to go outside and play and 10 minutes later they're dripping in sweat, their pale skin as red as a cherry on a 4th of July cake and they're ready to come inside. I can't blame them. But I convince them that we'll have fun with an indoor project or we'll go to the library, mall or fast food restaurant with an indoor play place. Great idea UNTIL you open the car door and realize the sauna is actually inside that car. Somehow we continue to survive. And somehow next year at this time, I'll wonder if it was just as hot in the years prior. Yes I will have forgotten that summers in the south are rather brutal. I seem to forget that while the temperature is 90*, the humidity makes it feel at least 100*. And by July the actual temperature will be 100* or higher and the humidity will not let up either. We still plan on having a fun filled summer. We will cool off with swimming pools(and plenty of sunscreen), ice cold water, lemonade or tea(sweetened, of course as only a southerner would) and plenty of indoor activities when all else fails.
Summer Time
We adore you summer season. You're filled with picnics, BBQ's, friends and family being together, lots of sunshine, snow cones, ice cream, amusement park visits, swimming pools and slip 'n slides and most assuredly H.E.A.T. and humidity. But summertime, you won't keep us in every day. No, we will fill our cooler with water, cool off that car and make our way through that thick humidity. We will have fun in spite of you. So be on your way heat. Find a new home humidity. The girls around here won't be beaten by you.~~
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer filled with at least one special memory.
