Oh Deer

I live in a rather rural area. I've lived here for more than 9 years. I've seen cats, dogs, skunks, squirrels, rabbits, pigs, cows, chickens, peacocks and yes deer. And for some reason each time my daughters and I see a deer, we squeal with delight. We point, almost break our necks to look for as long as we can. Why these creatures excite us so is beyond me. Of course they are pretty and graceful as they bounce through fields. But we've seen hundreds of them now and yet each sighting makes us act as if it's the first time we've seen such a creature. Today as we're driving to the bank, we look over where a house sits off the road a bit and in front of the house is almost a valley like yard. And there at the bottom of the valley are two deer playing, bouncing, jumping and smelling the ground. My oldest daughter and I saw the 2 deer but my youngest couldn't see them from her seat. She had the poutiest look on her face because she didn't see them. So guess what I do? Turn around, drive back up the road so we can stare at the playing deer. My youngest daughter was so excited as she finally saw the deer. They soon ran off and for the next mile or so that's all we talked about.
Isn't it amazing that this creature that we've seen over and over, sometimes in large groups, sometimes a single deer, brings us delight, puts a smile on our face and creates conversation between a mom and her daughters? I don't know why today I reflected on such a subject but it truly excited me to know that something that may be considered simple has a way of putting a little joy in our day. I'm thankful for little times such as those that bring a moment or two of happiness. I'm thankful to have my daughters, family and friends to share these simple moments with. I feel blessed each day to be alive and healthy enough to get out and see the beauty I'm surrounded by.
