My Frugal Daughter

Posted 10-03-2007 at 10:49 AM by tag1114
A while ago I posted about experiences in my childhood that helped me grow up and want to save money, want to use coupons and really made me aware of how to get the most for my money.
My oldest daughter apparently loves to save money too. During the summer, she saw me cutting coupons out, sorting them and filing them away. She ask why I use the coupons. I explained and she shook her head acceptingly. A couple of weeks later, I was making my grocery list and matching up coupons. She ask if she could save coupons. "Of course", I said, excited that she realized the value of these pieces of paper. So I go through the coupons, cutting the ones I think I'll use, pass the leftovers to her, she cuts out the ones she wants(which usually is everything) and then she sits and pretends to sort out her coupons. Very cute! She was putting her coupons in an envelope. But she realized this was not efficient and went in search of a coupon organizer. She found one, bought it and now proudly carries her coupons in her purse. I do occasionally ask if she has a coupon for an item and this pleases her beyond belief. She keeps all the fast food and restaurant coupons.....wishful thinking on her part, I think! However, one day they did come in handy. We decided to stop at Steak 'n Shake for lunch and she proudly announced that she had coupons for that, lol. She saved me several dollars and this pleased her all too much.
We always hope to pass along good habits to our children. I hope this is something she will be able to continue doing and seeing benefits from it. I hope that it makes her conscious of where her money is going, how much is being spent and enables her to grow up and save money. If not, I guess I tried and for as long as it lasts, it sure is fun and cute to watch.
My youngest daughter wants to get in on the action but at this point, things like Barbie dolls, High School Musical and playing outside are just more important~~
Keep saving girls!
