A Busy Signal

This little story reminds me of how far we've come and how many things my kids may never know about because of technology and constant advancement in such.
My 7 year old picked up the telephone to call her friend a few days ago. She came running to me, handing me the phone with the strangest look on her face. She then quietly says "mom I don't know what that means". Now, my little blond often doesn't know what something means! I put the phone to my ear to hear a busy signal. I hung up the phone with a new perspective for that day. It occurred to me at that very moment that neither of my kids had ever heard a busy signal on the phone. With call waiting, voice mail, call forwarding and all the other telephone "must haves", they had never heard that dreaded sound. I remember as a child and even teenager and possibly even as an adult hearing the busy signal. At that time, the telephone luxuries had not made their appearance in my home or the homes of my friends and family. I do remember when answering machines became the rage. We all had to have one with funny messages. And I remember when call waiting began making it's appearance. But now, it's a must have, right? We wouldn't want to have someone call us and get .........

Well, it all made me wonder why? Why is so urgent to have call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail, cell phones and all those things? Would it be a problem if someone did call and couldn't reach us right at that very moment? I really don't know. When I heard that busy signal the other day, personally, I was happy to have that be a thing of the past!
