Angry Michael Jackson... Why all the hype??

I am actually amazed at americans and they way that people are acting towards the death of michael jackson.
First of all, this man was a CHILD MOLESTER... No matter what court records say the man paid of the kids family. He had a strange sick obsession with little kids and it was ok with people?? If anyone of us had a neighbor like him who was bringing little kids around and acting the way he did, every single one of us on this board would be yelling, "CALL THE POLICE,,, HE IS A FREAK" and not shed a TEAR if that person died...

Second of all, the person was a drug addict. He was in rehab more then once for abusing prescription drugs. Many people on this board have judged and criticized people for less then that!

Third, he was 500 MILLION dollars in debt. Wasnt there recently a thread here about people who abuse credit and what it does to the rest of us that have credit?? But this was OK??

I just dont get it. I understand that he was an amazing singer and he did alot for pop music as we know it, but at the same time, he was a freak! And if anyone else did the things he did we would not be acting the same way...

I totally 100% agree...I have no idea why people go so nuts over famous people. He was absolutely a freak...or at least he had turned himself into a freak! Big deal...so he can sing and dance...so can millions of other people! Personally someone that can sing and dance doesn't do a dang thing for me, it's not what makes me impressed. Impress me...be a doctor or a scientist!

I'm not quite sure if he really molested anyone...IMHO I believe that he had the mentality of a child and he thought like a child so therefore he wanted to hang out with kids and buddy around as if he were 8 years old. Believing someone's allegations knowing that they could get millions out of someone is a tough pill to swallow...I just don't believe anyone where there's money to be had! People kill for LESS!

While i do not agree with what Michael Jackson did or what kind of person he was, you have to admit that he was a talented talented person. There will be no one like Michael Jackson. He is and was the King of Pop. I hate Michael Jackson as a person, but he was an icon and weather you want to believe it or not he was a phenominal dancer and there will be no one that can be like him.

For me personally, I have been sad at the loss of the boy/man that he was for a long time....and now sad at his passing that will never allow him to turn himself around into the person that he once was.

That said, I watched Farrah's story last night and then turned off the dateline show on Michael as I agree that the hype is not really appropriate and I'm disappointed that his passing seems to have trumped hers.

One look at pictures of Michael Jackson over the years is more than enough for me to say that he was a freak. He was very talented with song and dance but still a freak nonetheless.

As far as what he did to his face.....it always made me sad. He never thought he looked good enough. The man was mentally ill, but that did not stop me from being a huge fan! His music and dancing touched me from the first time I heard/saw him sing.

My children all grew up with him as well. Nothing will ever change the place I had in my heart for him and I am not ever going to judge anyone, especially on hear say.

I can't count the number of times I was feeling down and reached for his c.d. and always felt better. We listen to the song "Thriller" most every day in the car. We laugh and sing. It is what it is and we don't all have to feel the same way about him.

It has never been a crime to make your face look ugly. I see people everyday that I wonder why they want to look the way they do, but it is their business and not a crime.

The man had a massive fan base and there is a reason for that. I felt as if I had lost a childhood friend all day yesterday.

I think that he was a very troubled man. The reason that there was more hype over his death that Farrah's is that he was far more famous than she ever was.

He was uncommonly talented. The whole world knew who he was. (I was kind of surprised to see people in Shanghai and Bejing paying tribute) I have never met anyone who doesn't like his music. You have to admit that he was as good as Fred Astaire when it came to dance.

He was a deeply flawed human being.

P.S. I don't think that you could link any of those kids to MJ genetically.

Elvis was a freak, and a drug addict, that liked underage girls (and married one)....and people still line up at Graceland to morn him. Why? It's less about the man,and more about the art form. When Warhol died, it sent a ripple through the art world. James Dean, Marilyn...John Belushi. All "troubled" people. But, they all have one thing in common....they changed the face of their art form, and people associate milestones in their lives to these people. I can't think of anyone I know in their late 30's that doesn't remember when the Thriller album came out, or how MTV blew up after that. The whole "We are The World" thing -- which he was the co-writer of that song- was something my generation not only bore witness to, but it was a call to "arms" for us in our youth. People also are enamored of Jackson because many watched him grow up (or grew up right along with him) and it makes them question their own longevity and mortality. He is an icon....just like the others that I listed above...freaky or not, and icon. One might question his morality, innocence, and sanity in his later years...but, it doesn't wipe away that for the first 25+ years of his life he was a pioneer, and that seems to be what is getting the most play in the press. If it had been Madonna, I think we would see similar reporting going on. The drama about what happens with his kids, the debt, and the music catalog (which still generated about $75mil in revenue every year -- makes me wish I owned a few Beatles songs) is going to play out in the press for weeks and weeks to come. If you don't like it now....hold on, because this is going to be a bumpy ride for you.

I agree. I'm getting tired of turing on the TV and hearing it all again, and again. Did you hear what Celine Dion said on Larry King? It's just like when President Kennedy and Elvis died. You'll always remember where you were and what you were doing. I don't think so. Not me, anyway.

I think there was so much coverage of Farrah before she died that her death was not going to be covered that much anyway. And then something bigger came along.

Jackson was odd. But I'm not sure that he was that much odder than a lot of people I see in the public eye. I see people with body altering piercings, tattooings, plastic surgeries, body carvings, and other things, and I have to wonder what possessed them. I see people who climb mountains, cross the ocean in rafts, fly experimental planes, live with bear etc. and I have to wonder what possessed them. All are seeking something. But what that is, I'm not sure. Is it death, fame, solitude, approval, lost childhood, or love? I doubt if they know and I sure don't.

I do hope the allegations against Jackson were false. I do hope that his children find a loving home together. I do feel sad that he is gone. And I do hope that the endless coverage of his death, stops really really soon.

Farrah's death was no surprise. Sorry to speak ill of the dead, but she and Ryan O'Neal had been milking it for quite a while.

Jackson was not only a much bigger star than Farrah, his death was a shock and completely unexpected. I think the combination of the two is the reason for all the coverage. Remember when Diana died? I think it's very much the same rationale -- shock that such a young person died so unexpectedly. Whatever Jackson became in the 90's, he was a huge star in the 80's and his influence on music will be felt for a very long time. Farrah, sorry, was a one-hit wonder who had faded from most people's radar 30 years ago. I'm surprised anyone covered her death at all.

Jackson likely was a child molester. He was strange, and had completely disfigured himself, and had become a sad kind of freakish monster. But really -- the same could be said about Elvis. Remember that Priscilla was an absolute child when he took up with her. And when it comes to talent, Jackson had a far greater gift than Elvis, IMO. Such a shame he squandered all he had.

Yes he's a freak. But one of the most famous people in the world.I think alot of his face surgeries were because he didn't want to ever end up looking like his dad. I heard that on a show and it does make some sense. Poor kid was bound to turn out weird. Domineering, abusive father. Forced into work as a young child. No childhood to speak of. No real friends as a child/teenager. None of us can imagine that type of childhood and the ensuing pressure to be better and bigger in the music industry. I have no idea if he actually abused children or if he truly just wanted to recapture a lost childhood which is impossible to do. We will probably never really know the truth on that issue. Drug addict-yep. I guess it started with physical pain which alot of addictions do. Then he had so many people who wouldn't say no to him, constantly enabling. I feel bad that he never had a chance to feel like a normal person. God rest his soul.

My opinion of Michael Jackson is quite different then most people here.I saw Michael Jackson as a very kind hearted person who bent over backwards trying to please people, the media ,and his fans.In my opinion he loved children, and loved to see them happy.Through the children he wanted to feel the happiness and joys that he never got to experience as a kid.As far as his face, I believe he did not expect the outcome to be what it was and tried to fix it and made it worse.I believe he was very close to his surgeon ,so he goes on to pretend to cover up his true feelings with excuses so not to give the surgeon a bad name.
I have always had a deep admiration for Michael Jackson.I read articles on the internet that he said he was not physically fit enough to do as many shows as they wanted to book him for this year and was pretty upset when they booked him for more then what he had desired despite his wishes.I think he was stressed to death and over medicated.
As far as paying off the familys of child molestation charges, thats just the kind of guy he is.He'd even give up his own reputation to give money to those less fortunate ,despite the decietfulness and lies.

Rest in Peace ,Michael.

I have never been fan, and never will be. Not my type of music, and although he could sing, and dance, I don't think of him as being *great*. I have seen better singers, better song writers and without a doubt.....individuals with much better character and morals. When I think of people who have molded or shaped our world.....Jackson will not be on it. Just don't get the admiration for such a troubled soul...

That's your opinion and your entitled to it, but a lot feel different. He was a talented talented artist and no one can take that away from him. He was someone that could dance like no one i have ever seen. Yes there is great dancers out there, but can they top michael jackson? hell no!! He was different and unique. His voice was great. He had a terrible terrible childhood and i hate the things he has done, but that still doesn't take away from a wonderful artist he was and an icon weather you want to see him that way. Everyone else has classified him as an icon and he is the King of Pop and always will be.

Because he changed music and music videos, because he paved the way for black artists, his was the 1st to be on MTV, because he was the worlds largest pop icon, because he was a huge entertainer, because Thriller was the largest album ever, because he had how many number 1 songs?, because he sold over 175 million albums, I mean think about that number, etc., etc.....

I don't think he was a child molester either. I think he was naive and misguided, but I think he meant well. He was very eccentric.

I don't get the whole Elvis thing, but I did not live through his rein. I did live through the 80's when Michael Jackson was huge. He will be forever missed.

Obviously, those people who didn't love M. Jackson are in the minority. He transcended race and age and was a Pop Icon for many generations. You cannot argue that anyone there has been no one who has had as much success as he has. He was the first black artist to perform on MTV, he has the biggest selling album in history, Thriller, has had 13 Grammy awards, and is known throughout the world as an exciting, inventive, gifted musician, choreographer and performer.

Clearly, he had things in his life that were tragic. From his childhood to the molestation charges to the way he died. For the record, he was never convicted on the molestation charges and therefore he cannot be called a pedophile. That is some people's guess but obviously, the people who are mourning him choose to not see him that way.

Children who grow up under a microscope like he did do not have a childhod and have many adult issues as evidenced by many child actors who then go on and just lose their minds as adults. I know that his childhood was awful and his family is full of dysfunction therefore I believe that he lived a lonely life full of yes men and sychophants. But his music is legendary and he will be missed as he changed music and without his contribution to music there would not be the crossover between what was "white" music and "black" music. He transcended all races and color to be considered the "King of Pop" .

You cannot name a single artist who after being inthe business for 39 years, could sell out 50 concerts in days. A music concert. I do not think Elvis could do that as he was an American phenom and Jackson was an international phenom.

You're right. My bad. I should not compare the two. MJ was much, much bigger....but Farrah was prettier.

I guess I am gullible enough to believe that the effort was to raise awareness of cancer and push for more experimental treatments in the US......milking it? I dunno about that. But it seems like most people are evil and/or wrong in your book...

The question was why the hype regarding Michael Jackson? The OP seems to think that he's a pedophile and since he was irresponsible with his money that his death didn't matter much. Maybe they have a better understanding of the phenomenon that he was.

I don't think that Farrah's death surprised anyone. We knew that she was at the end of her journey. While tragic, something bigger came along.

Michael Jackson was huge.

While I'm not a MJ fan, I do have a background in the music industry and can certainly appreciate all that he has done for the industry, the music, history, equality, etc.

I had to ask my roommate if I was a cold hearted witch because I didn't "feel" the loss in a painful sort of way (as in shedding a tear). Yes, the King of Pop is gone and yes, he has left his legacy. But for people to make spectacles of themselves I think is ridiculous.

ITA.

I can say this...My Mother, who died at the age of 70 years old in 2001, was "right there" to greet Michael when he passed. LOL. She LOVED Michael Jackson. She had all his cassettes (she did not have a CD player then). My kids would go over to see Grandma, and they would watch MTV together.

I am going over to my Dad's tomorrow, and going to ask him for my Mom's Michael Jackson collection of cassettes.

Lisa Marie Presley posted on her blog regarding Michael Jackson. She set the record straight about many things. You can read it here:

I do not know what MJ did or didn't do w/ young children. Personally, I think he was a troubled person, who was a victim of abuse when he was a child. I think that perhaps he and/or his "people" paid the huge settlements not because of guilt, but maybe to protect the children involved. I don't know (and neither do most of you!!)
Why the hoopla?
It was unexpected. Good or Bad as a person: MJ had an enormous impact on pop culture and music. He transcended race. He transcended gender in that guys wanted to be him and girls just "wanted" him. I think, like Elvis, MJ was a victim of people he chose to surround himself with. Had he, like Elvis, had different "handlers" and entourage--things might have ended differently.
I'm saddened only in the sense that MJ was partof my childhood and teen years. I remember the summer that "Thriller" came out.....OMG! The countless hours we spent listening to that music!

Unhappy

usnamom I totally agree with all you wrote. I too personally never believed he was a child molester, I know there are other people who think differently. In one of my papers this morning, they have a list of so many medications he was taking each day and it is alot, they also stated he was only 125lbs when he died and that he only ate one meal again. If this is all true and again only saying what was in the paper we will never know or perhaps we will. Again he was pushed in the limelight at such a early age and there was always talk about the abuse and beatings at the hand of his dad. I think perhaps he did not have love as a child and that is why he decided to build neverland and invite many sick and other children come and play and ride the rides. Again there are millions and millions of people who loved him. And no matter what you cannot say he did not change the music world. As far as his operations and wearing protective clothing, he had to have issues to want to make such drastic changes in his personal appearence, as fas as being a wacko as he has been called, there are so many other actors and pop stars and singers who have done some of the same things. In the end again I personally feel he was blessed with amazing talent . Peace. Catherine

I'm old enough to have lived through both. I doubt there ever would have been a Michael Jackson phenom if Elvis Presley hadn't paved the way. Jackson was a power all his own, but the groundwork for his ultimate success came from the music that Elvis brought to this country. I can remember my friend's parents having fits because they wanted to listen to Elvis and his "Negro" music. My mother, who loved music, just said, he's got a nice voice and his songs are really good, when I brought one of his records home. And just as there probably would be no Jackson, there would have been no Presley without the influence of the southern gospel revivals and the musicians, black and white who played all the great music of an earlier era for Elvis to listen to when he was young. Music is a living thing. It tells our stories, cries our tears and makes us feel joyful. What a dreary world this would be without it.

Oh and I have to add, don't forget people like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, and my personal favorite, Ray Charles.

I think the untimely death of Michael Jackson was shocking and a very sad end to a sad life. Perhaps that's why all the "hoopla".

He was a very flawed human being. I personally don't admire artists for their personal life, but for their talent. MJ made a huge mess of his personal life on many, many, fronts. He also changed music forever and was an unbelieveable performer (I did see him in concert and will never forget that experience. And that is the reason I am sorry for his passing.

Perhaps this is a generational thing? Maybe those of us of "a certain age" remember his amazing performances and contribution more than the younger folks who think of him only as wacko jacko? Just a thought..

I really dont care to see a memorial on almost every station but I did enjoy his music as a kid and sorry he's gone. I didnt listen to him when he started falling off the deep end but I enjoyed his younger days.

I think Michael Jackson was talented but a sick freak and I don't personally know one person who mourns his passing. It seems to me that he was a damaged, deeply unhappy, man-child and his death was a release from his misery.

I think that it's obvious that you do not love Michael Jackson. He is known and much loved worldwide. Your comment is rather like sayindg that the world did not love Princess Diana because Camilla did not love her.

I find it just a tad bit strange that so many people are expressing their *love* for Jackson. Love?? I think its one thing to admire an artist, but...love? You love your children, you love your siblings, parents...but I can honeslty say that I save my love for those people that are actually physically a part of my life. I don't feel love for a singer, actor...sports star. I watched on TV as people openly carried on like they had lost someone who shared the bond of love with them. This man didn't know them from a hole in the ground, and sadly they didn't really know him either. I can understand feeling sad, but geeeezzz people, get a grip. JMHO

For a lot of people, music is a part of their life and it brings them joy. His music was incredible and it was a part of their life. They do love Michael Jackson. I loved his music and because his music was a part of him, I loved him. I will miss him and what he could have been or wanted to be. It is a tragedy that his death was so soon and the later years colored his successes of years past but you cannot negate what he was to music and to some people.

I do not think that people just loved him because he was black. Good grief, I have never heard such stupidity. Oh, wait. I guess I have here.

You can complain all you want but hold on because he will be missed, he is going to be revered, there will be show after show about his death and life, there will be many shows of his music and his life over the next few years. He meant a lot to many many people. Perhaps this might be the time for you people who think the entire thing is silly and you don't have any use for Michael Jackson or what he stood for to go camping.

Very well said Nita!

I watched a special on CNN last night about Michael Jackson. It was called "Man in the Mirror". I sat and cried at the end. The man was a genius. He was. Yes, my Mother loved Michael Jackson. Like she loved lobster, gardening, watching MTV, baking, and oh yes, her family. I also love Michael Jackson. So, I guess I need to get a grip too, like tammyleeb said. Jeesh.

Agreed.

Jackson had no shortage of flaws, but his contributions to the music world will last for decades, I think.

And to the criticism of people saying they "love" him, well, sheesh. People "love" ice cream, they "love" roller coasters, they "love" Grey's Anatomy. It's not always meant in the sense you use it for your family.

People are obsessed with MJ because this world is full of a bunch of nuts/fools! Anyone obsessed with any celebrity has a screw loose IMHO! They are just PEOPLE...they aren't GODS! Their sh*t stinks just like everyone else. They belch and fart and everything else nasty just like everyone else. They have to be buried 6 feet under so they won't stink just like everyone else! Why would anyone cry over someone they've never even met and they wouldn't give a flip about you if you died! People are so nuts about celebrities that these people can barely leave their homes because hoards of people assault them...if that's not nuts nothing is!

Okay ladies....its been a rough week. I came close to losing my dh....right now love does indeed mean a different thing to me then it obviously does to you. Nothing like a good old slap in the face to make you look at your life, and the REAL things that matter. I guess I was just blowing off some steam, hoping that perhaps it might be a good idea to concentrate on what really matters in life. If spending time mourning Jackson is important to your life...then go for it.

Crying is a very normal emotion. I cried when Princess Diana died. I cried when the Pope died. I cried when Ronald Reagan died. I did not know them. They touched my life. I have cried when I read a sad story, or when I have been moved by hearing a beautiful piece of music. I have cried tears of joy when my daughter got married or when my grandchildren were born. I cried when my son died too. I guess that's ok because I knew him?

Your comments are totally out of the line, especially about having to be buried 6 feet under so they won't stink just like everyone else.

So happy to have enough love to be able to love as many people as I want to. I don't have to "save" it for family.

OK so they are so good they don't need to be buried, they don't stink like you and me? Like I said....NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In your mind these people are not human...they are something supernatural that they don't decompose maybe they assend to a high plain? My point was that these people are just humans...just like everyone else but apparently you didn't get the point or somehow believe they are not just human?

Oh, brother. I guess the only people or things we can love will be our family? Whew, I am glad I found out before I made some fatal mistake. I do love my family but I also understand that people also can love things outside of their family. I love Mother Theresa for what she did for mankind. I love the Beatles because their music brings me to a place that made me happy. I love MJ because of what he did with his music made history in all kinds of ways. His contribution was amazing and I love that he did it.
Yep, I will use the word love. Not like, but love. I am sorry that you almost lost your husband his week, op but it doesn't mean that the people who are mourning the loss of someone they feel was a great contributor to music and a humanitarian with a vision of what his music could do....(make us aware of the children in Africa who were starving) cannot feel the loss of someone they loved. He did quite a bit of good in the world. He will be missed. Maybe not by some of you and that is okay. I do not consider myself a nut or a fool. I do not consider anyone who is going to miss him or his music or calls him a legend a nut or a fool. But it is a different story for those who want to say that he didn't make a contribution to music history or he is only loved by black people because he is black or "was black"....I will say they are silly. But that is my opinion. It doesn't have to be yours.

You assume to know my feelings regarding death. Where did I state that I thought that those people were not human, or super human? Because I cried when they died? Did I state that they were so good that they don't need to be buried? What is your point? You are making no sense.

I can relate to where the Jackson family is right now. They have lost their son, father, and brother. My tears are sympathy and understanding for the family.
I am also sad for Michael.

I am constantly amazed at how negative, judgmental and emotional people can become over what they have been fed by the media. I never knew Michael Jackson personally, therefore, how can I judge him? Who is to say what is true and what is not? And what of society's responsibility in creating this person that was either highly admired or the object of our disdain? I can't imagine living life in such a scrutinized spotlight. What does that do to a person? Make no mistake, Michael's success or failures belong to all of us, as we contributed as a society. I am very dismayed at how the media is his enemy one minute and his greatest fan the next. What an odd lot human beings are.

I can say that for me, I found his music and performances very moving and they did touch me in a way that great entertainment should.

My daughter(15) believes everything she hears about anyone. I am always trying to explain to her that you just can't do that.

Great point. Especially liked the part about how judgemental and negative some people can be without proof. Thanks.
