Did your kids find summer jobs this year?

Around where we live, summer jobs are scarce this year. DD was very lucky to get her first real summer job at a summer camp very close by to our home. Most of the other counselors are college-age, some are even teachers. We feel very lucky that she was given this position. So, were your kids able to find summer jobs this year? What are they doing?

They've both found part-time, summer into the school year jobs. My son works about 12 hours/week at a Walgreen's and also works with a tree surgeon on his off-days. My daughter, in addition to the odd babysitting job, works about four hours a week at an optometrist's office and also just got a job at a new McDonald's scheduled to open in about two weeks. I'm very proud of both of them for treating getting a job like a job. The market is so tough for kids right now.

My oldest, now home from college, had a hard time finding a summer job and ending up working through a temp agency and placed at FedEx on the 2am-6am shift. He kept looking and is now working for a landscaping company, but has to drive about 30 minutes to get there...and worse for him, get up in the morning as it starts at 7am. It's supposed to be 3 days a week but because of all the rain, they are behind and so it will be full time until they get caught up with the work. It's exhausting work....much harder than cashiering at JCPenney, but they weren't rehiring for the summer. And I'm learning how to get mega dirt out of his clothing....LOL. Tips anyone?

I think the owner of the landscaping company hired him because he is an alumni of DS' high school and they like to take care of one another.

Well Hope works in the city has for 3 years now at a art gallery.. Tommy works with my husband , my husband has his own construction business with his Dad and brothers. While Caitlin like everyone else has been doing some babysitting, but has also put in applications it has been hard for her age and her friends to find jobs, they truly are not really hiring that much... So we will have to see, she would like to work at tropical smoothie but so does every other teenager... Peace. Catherine

My daughter is 15 and was lucky enough to get a job at a family owned italian restaurant close to our house. She actually started when school was in. It is not just a summer job. During school, she works Friday and Saturday nights.

My DS is home after finishing his first year of college. He got a job at Whirlpool here working 40 hrs a week. He's thrilled. He'll be there until school starts back up. They hire college kids every summer for summer work. You have to take proof you are in college to get the job.

A job with a tree surgeon sounds interesting. It's definitely a conversation starter! What sort of things do they do?

DD(16) had 3 jobs. One at Pac Sun in the mall that started before school got out. One at Ocean Breeze water Park(summer job) and one at a market down in Sandbridge. The market wanted her 40 hours so since she hated Pac Sun and Ocean Breeze she gave notice and only works at the market now.

Son 14 wants a job but no jobs for 14 year olds

My oldest son is headed off to college end of August. He's a music performance major so he's been giving viola lessons to younger students (mostly middle school kids) here at our house. DD is 15 and has been doing some pet sitting for neighbors. ~Lisa

Oh, not so much. Mostly it consists of cutting down and trimming trees! But it's good for him to be outside doing physical labor like that. He likes it.

Our oldest DS(17) is working at a waterpark. When he's not working there, he's working for our construction business (only M-F though).

Youngest DS (15) is doing odd jobs around the neighborhood. He's presently painting the IL's barn and as soon as thats done, he'll move to the neighbors.

Don't have any kids looking for jobs, but I have noticed that there seems to be no real shortage of part time jobs around here that would be suitable for teens. The grocery stores have signs up most of the time as do many of the fast food and video rental places.

Not top quality, high paying jobs to be sure but all seem like the type of jobs most of us started out with as kids.

My dd (15) is once again babysitting for a family that I don't have spots for in my daycare. The girls are 7 and 5 so it really is nice and easy for her!

She is going to try to get a job once the school year starts for nights and weekends but alot of companies don't hire around here until the kids are 16.

No, but my daughter is doing an internship this summer with a bakery. She will learn skills, and gets credit for school. She plans on pursuing culinary arts.

My 13 y/o DS is doing his second year at his current summer job working at a local skeet-shooting range. The pay is good but the tips are wonderful!

Rhonda, that is too funny. I am working the giftshops at Sandbridge for the summer-the one right next to the fire station, and the one next to the frozen yogurt shop. Usually when I am working, I hit the market for a hot dog, and occasionally a bit of panta spread (insane!). There are a couple of really cute girls working there, who are always so friendly-I bet one of them was your daughter. I will look for her next time-meanwhile, if you ever come down, come see me! If there is a black Expedition, or a Greenish Honda Odyssey, I am at one of the stores. The kids also have friends who work at the Island, right next to the market. And for the record-the new restaurant Zest is amazing for a date night-leave the kids at home. It's a small, small, world...

DS got a job as a lifeguard. Actually he had several offers, but took the one that paid the most and promised the most hours. The good thing is they want him back next year!

DD is only 13, but she has done volunteer work with a church youth summer program. Whats so cool is that it isn't even our church and they have also asked her back for next year!

Our family has been pretty fortunate in this area. DH has a full-time job, I have been a substitute teacher almost full-time all year, and have done ok being a Homemade Gourmet consultant, and was able to pick up a job at a giftshop down at our locals only beach. DS #1 (just finished his first year of college and is home for the summer), has two jobs. One is construction work from 7am-5:30pm., Monday-Friday. He also picks up extra shifts at the grocery store every few days. My 16 yr. old has been working as a dishwasher for the last year at a restaurant. He also babysits a lot in our neighborhood-all of this on top of keeping up w/ high school baseball. Our family is blessed that we have ample jobs. While we are working our butts off, we thank our lucky stars every day!!!!
