Small Desk Fan Disaster

My son uses a small metal desk fan at night when he sleeps. Last night he turned it on, and sparks went flying everywhere, landing on his upper legs
and the mattress pad, which was on one of those blow-up beds on the floor. Thank God I was right there when it happened as this certainly could have started a fire. Though I freaked out, I reacted quickly and shut the fan off, unplugged it, and wet down the mattress pad. As far as my son, his legs looked a little blotchy where the sparks hit him, but this morning he has small red scabs.

So, I am flaming mad about this and I'm not sure how to handle it. At the least, I plan on notifying the manufacturer that makes the fan and informing them exactly what happened. They should certainly be aware if there is faulty wiring, which appears to be the case. I have never had an experience like this and am not sure exactly what to do.

By the way, I bought the fan at Target two years ago and it is a bright red metal desk fan called Hawaiian Breeze (may have also been available in black).

Oh my, how scary. I'm glad he's OK. It's a good thing it didn't happen when no one was in the room. I'd hate to think what could have happened.

I'd contact Target and also the local tv news..so they can do a segment on the dangers and perhaps save others. I am so relieved to hear you caught it in time !

Holy Smokes! (no pun intended). Thank goodness there wasn't a fire.

Is it the tiny desk fan in the metal cage? I think my DS has one of those at school....

I have the exact same thing, only in stainless steel. It is very temperamental and sometimes doesn't turn on at all. Thanks for giving me the push I need to get rid of it once and for all!

I'm glad he didn't get hurt and I know you all already know this but I can't help saying "they just don't make things like they used to".

Contact the consumer protection agency. They can tell you if they have received other complaints of the same product, and it it has been recalled. Notify the manufacturing company. Get the names of people you talk to and their title. I had a defective product, called the company and was immediately transferred to their corporate attorney. The story goes on from there, but that's where you need to start.
