My 14 year old is going to Sylvan for Algebra. He really likes it. It is not always one on one. I know sometimes the teacher has a couple of kids. You do make an appointment to go though, so they don't want to have too many kids at once.
DS started going late in the school year, so I can't say that it has helped a lot yet. It would have helped if he actually turned in his homework at school. I knew he should not have been in algebra, ahead of a lot of his class. Math is not his strong subject.
DS is supposed to go twice a week. It costs $46.00 an hour or $92.00 a week. My DH is losing his job in July, and we have special permission to only go once a week for the time being. My son does not want to give it up. It does seem to bolster his confidence with algebra. DS will be taking algebra again his first semester in high school in the fall.
There are cheaper alternatives. You could probably call your school district and find a teacher who will do tutoring for a lot cheaper. I work in the childrens department at the public library. I know there is a teacher doing tutoring for $16.00 an hour working with 4th graders. They meet at the library for the tutoring. She does a few kids with back to back appointments.
If you go with Sylvan, do go to their website. They do have coupons and discounts.
